Alchimie has acquired UK-based OTT (over-the-top-tv) provider, TVPlayer, suggesting the move will accelerate its entry into the UK.
I joined TVPlayer back in April 2012 as their Marketing Manager. Prior to this I had worked for MTV as their Commercial Marketing manager. I knew the TV market very well. OTT (meaning over-the-top TV or what is now known as streaming TV) was quite a new term back then.
The next few years proved how difficult it is to break into a market dominated by TV giant Sky. Yet I worked with the management team on their go-to-market strategy and plans. Building relationships with TV partners as well as working with our in house development team on the app and website.
TVPlayer cemented its reputation as one of the top free apps of 2014. After notching up a landmark 250,000 downloads within just 28 days of launching. TVPlayer was a Top 40 downloaded app within 24 hours of appearing on the App Store.
The channel line-up for TVPlayer includes the main terrestrial channels from the BBC portfolio, ITV1, Channel 4 and Channel 5. Together with an extensive portfolio of other channels including 4Music, heat, Kiss, Kerrang!, The Box, Smash Hits, Magic as well as Global’s Capital and Heart TV. TVPlayer also launched the UK’s first Desi TV pack, in recognition of a growing demand from viewers within the UK.
Expanding the portfolio took time due to the negotiation of TV content rights. Soon we launched TVPlayer Plus. A subscription add-on service with the likes of MTV, History and Nat Geo, costing £6.99 a month. Designed to sit alongside Netflix in your pay-TV portfolio.
TVPlayer now has a 450,000 viewer base and has been downloaded 4 million times. Alchimie has partnerships with over 250 highly-respected content rights-owners including Arte, ZDF and NHK. Resulting in one of Europe’s largest portfolios of premium, multi-language, factual content.
With a special focus on The Natural World, Crime, Current Affairs, History and children’s content. Alchimie’s 40,000 hour catalogue has the depth and breadth to regularly refresh the SVoD section of TVPlayer.
“TVPlayer gives us the opportunity to accelerate our plans for the launch of Alchimie UK, the visibility to support negotiations with UK rights owners, as well as access to audience data,” commented Nicolas d’Hueppe, CEO of Alchimie. “There are tremendous synergies to support the acquisition; our content portfolio enables us to restructure the channel offering behind the paywall, additionally our strong relationships with telecoms companies will introduce a potential new market to TVPlayer.”
The acquisition of TVPlayer builds on Alcimie’s recent expansion into Spain, Austria, France, Belgium, Germany and Australia.
“As part of Alchimie, TVPlayer will be able to offer audiences a much broader range of high quality content over SVoD channels, designed to appeal to special interests and passions,” advised Adam Smith, Founder of TVPlayer. “Whether you’re a gamer, a nature lover, a classical music lover, or a motorsports fan, you be able to find the best content on TVPlayer.”
