Go for broke day 2018
This is how I am imagine myself. A female writer in past times.

The phrase “Go for broke” has roots in Hawaiin Pidgin meaning “wager everything”. It means to risk everything in an all-out effort. OK, so we are not asking you to gamble your future away, but how about doing something for yourself today, which will challenge you. Whether it’s in your professional life, a relationship, if you are thinking about starting up your own business, starting a new hobby, then why not make today the day you go ahead and do it!

Today is the day to Go For Broke!

Most of us live within our comfort zones. We have so many dreams or things we want to do, but fear holds us back. Fear turns into apathy, and then all of those things you dreamed about doing, you have no time for. They never happen.

Stepping out of your comfort zone makes you truly grow as a person. Challenge yourself. Dare to do something different. Being stuck in a rut often leads to depression. Don’t spend your life regretting things you haven’t done. Let’s do this! Let’s go for broke!

What was your dream when you were growing up?

I wanted to be a doctor, then a company secretary, but most of all I wanted to be a writer. It was the one thing so personal to me, that I lacked the confidence to put my writing ‘out there’. I wrote for a number of magazines, but I most of all wanted to write a book. So today is the day, I start to write a book. Yes, really.

What’s the one thing you will regret not doing?

It’s easy to forget your dreams and life goals when living day-to-day. If I died tomorrow, the one thing I would regret? Not spending more time with friends and family. It would also not be not seeing my book published. Or writing a column for a paper or magazine. It would be to not have travelled and seen more of the world. Ok, that’s not one. However, what would yours be?

Taj Mahal - go for broke day
I have always wanted to bask in the fun in exactly this spot opposite the Taj Mahal – I had better get saving!

What scares you the most?

Travelling never really appealed to me because I was always too broke to go! I never had any savings or the means to go and see the world.  Holidays were never prioritised as I was always living in the here and now. Broke. Living in the city tends to drain funds too.

So, the one thing which would scare me the most? You got it. Travelling by myself. I am scared of the dark (yes really), am useless with Google maps, but if I could challenge myself to do anything this year. It will be to travel somewhere by myself. Right then google. Where shall we go this year?

My just do it song!

If you could “Go For Broke” what would you do today?

People say write about what you know. So I did. I founded Broke Girl in the City – a smart girl’s guide to leading a fabulous lifestyle on a budget! A career spanning entertainment, bars & nightclubs (and frequenting them), film, music and TV, there isn’t much I don’t know about how to have fun in the city when completely broke.
