Deaf Awareness Week runs from 2nd-8th May this year with the aim of raising awareness of deafness and hearing loss. Giving everyone the chance to enjoy great cinema has always been at the heart of what Rooftop Film Club does. So they’ll be partnering with Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, supporting the annual event with a dedicated series of films that aim to highlight the deaf experience.
Kicking off with a screening of the BAFTA-Award Winning drama Belfast on 2nd May.
Films will be shown with open captions and will have people trained in British Sign Language on-site to sign throughout the screening. Signers will also be present at the box office, giving everyone a chance to fully enjoy the entire experience, from beginning to end.
Non-deaf people are of course more than welcome to join and are invited to wear noise-cancelling headphones throughout to experience the film just as a deaf person would.
Belfast tells the story of Buddy, a young boy on the cusp of adolescence, whose life is filled with familial love, childhood hijinks, and a blossoming romance. Yet, with his beloved hometown caught up in increasing turmoil, his family faces a momentous choice: hope the conflict will pass or leave everything they know behind for a new life. Keep your eyes peeled for announcements on the next signed film in the series.
All profits from the first screening will be donated to Rooftop Film Club’s charity partner for 2022, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.
Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is a UK charity that trains dogs to help deaf people leave loneliness behind and reconnect with life. These amazing dogs provide love, companionship and emotional support while alerting deaf people to important and life-saving sounds. Guests will also be invited to donate to the charity at the checkout for regular screenings throughout the season.
Rooftop Film Club is also delighted to renew its partnership with streaming service NOW for a second year. A partnership made in movie-heaven NOW is as passionate about curating world-class cinema for its members as we are about bringing films to the big screen.
